Project Overview
An architect-led renovation in Thomas Street, Hampton, created a two-storey extension for a growing family. The brief was to maintain the relaxed coastal Hampton feel while adding much-needed living space and indoor–outdoor connection.
Trevor and his team extended up and out, starting with a new slab and robust timber/steel frame. The house was fully reclad in coastal-tough weatherboards, upgraded with high-performance glazing, and finished with a wraparound deck and balcony.
The result is light, durable and calm — a modern family home that feels fresh and spacious, yet still very “Hampton.”
Design Approach
- Respect the original scale: the second storey sits naturally with the gable form.
- Coastal durability: cladding and finishes chosen to withstand salt air and summer heat.
- Indoor–outdoor living: wide doors and balcony create a natural flow to the garden.
- Family-first: more bedrooms, living areas, and storage, all tied together with a clean design.

“Exactly what we hoped for — more space, better flow, and still very Hampton.” — Homeowners (placeholder quote)
Similar Projects on the Mornington Peninsula
This Hampton project resonates strongly with Mount Martha, Mornington, Mount Eliza, Dromana, Safety Beach, Blairgowrie and Rye, where weatherboard homes and coastal family upgrades are common.
For example:
- Mount Martha & Martha Cove — extensions that preserve bay views with decks and balconies
- Mount Eliza & Mornington (Beleura Hill) — weatherboard upgrades that add family space without losing character
- Blairgowrie & Rye — turning weekenders into full-time family homes with smart second storeys
Where this project style fits best
- Mount Martha (incl. Martha Cove) – family upgrades, decks/balconies, bay views.
- Mornington (Beleura Hill & Fishermans Beach) – character weatherboards, prestige pockets.
- Mount Eliza – established homes needing sensitive scale + extra space.
- Dromana – growing families; practical coastal extensions.
- Safety Beach / Martha Cove – marina living; upstairs outlooks, low-maintenance cladding.
- Blairgowrie – weekender → family home transitions.
- Rye – similar to Blairgowrie; second-storey additions common.
- Balnarring – village feel; weatherboard character to respect.
- Somers – coastal cottages; scale-sensitive additions.
Not all homes get the $10,000 magazine shoot, so we take photos with permission to show the style of work. Sure they’re not as glamorous as the concept images, but we live in the real world and help our clients imagine their dream through beautiful impressions.
